Size : 17 x 10 x 14 cms
I created this work for an exhibit titled “Chhotti Rickshaw Baddi Savari”, an expression by the Artists of Amdavad (India), inspired by the city auto rickshaw drivers.
The rickshaw drivers reflect the ethos of the city that is at once both modern and traditional, an ancient city that adopts new technologies while retaining its cultural heritage. Despite the GPS people still prefer asking the auto rickshaw drivers for directions around the city, signifying the presence of the drivers’ that is integral to the city’s identity. Though the rickshaw is compact and small (chhotti), it opens a window to a larger than life experience (baddi savari, literally referring to a large ride). I have used real colours of auto rickshaws to retain the authenticity of the machine and the experience.
