Title: Yakshini
Medium: Cement
Size: 13 x 7 x 52 cms
Often represented either as a man or a woman, the figure of a Yakshini is a nature-spirit that is found in traditional Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain folklore. Often placed as gatekeepers in ancient temples, these demi-gods and goddesses had the power to grant wishes and bestow health and happiness upon seekers. My mural depicts a yakshini with a caged parrot in one hand, symbolizing the desires that seek freedom, and a dwarf under her feet signifying suppressed emotions and wishes.
